Chapter 5, section 3: spying on the neighbors

He slipped up the buzzing heat of a sunbeam to the back porch with lidded metal trash bin and piles of newspaper: both English and French, but no other languages. Slipping under the cracked-open window was a formality. He could have just as easily gone straight through the glass, but he preferred the illusion that he wasn’t uninvited.

Chapter 5, section 2: Hermes’ neighborhood life

David and Zahra’s dépanneur was a very cheerful place. They enjoyed catering to tastes that reminded their neighbors of their original homes. Manioc flour, black beans and coconut water sat next to zaatar, sponge bread and feves-au-lard. In the wall fridges, milk and yogurt shared shelf space with cashew and guava juices, kefir and wedges of Wensleydale cheese. The ingestibles were one big happy family—except for the beer. The beer needed a fridge all to itself.
