“C’mon, Johnny Freefall unloading these things all over town and your twins caught one of his Scraz boys boasting about stealing your meat at the warehouse the other night. Tell me he’s not up to something.”

CHAPTER 2, section 7: Club Social
“Patti,” Hermes grinned, “You know I follow your advice to the letter: no closets, no balconies, nothing. It was the dog.”
CHAPTER 2, section 6: all quiet
Then he was alone. Rumpled trashcans lay about, their contents dripping from walls and windows. He counted the carcasses of seven cats in the alley, and there must have been more covered by debris.
CHAPTER 2, section 5: Rumble!
The sounds of the rumble seemed to originate in an alley between two granite buildings. As he stepped slowly forward, a trashcan lid flew by with a cat attached.
CHAPTER 2, section 4: Hermes’ agenda
He had chosen this gangster persona, and he would play out the thread of this story to its end, whether that was being riddled with holes in a back alley or spiriting himself away to a Third World country in order to let time pass and change his identity before starting over again, again.
